Having read other reviews, I was very careful removing the sticky tab that holds the roll together. To avoid tearing the plastic, I used a sharp edge. No tearing plastic.When I separated the first bag and unfolded it, it appeared to be a single sheet of plastic. Pattern on one side, blank on the other. I recalled some reviewers saying it was a sheet not a bag. I could just barely see there was "crimping" on the end that separated it from the roll, so I wet my fingers and rubbed the opposite edge and eventually it separated and I could expand the bag.I've used about six of these so far. The word "thick" is misleading in the advertising. Perhaps they are, if you use a micrometer. They feel very thin to me, but absolutely functional. I don't tie them closed, I just twist the top and carry it along until the walk is done. No smell, no leaking, no plastic tearing. I hold the bag in the same hand I push my glasses up on my face: I repeat, no smell.They work great for my small dog. I can't speak how they'd work with the volume of a big dog.
